Weddings in the past have focused on a more “practical” role for the flowers, being either centrepieces on tables, bouquets and buttonholes for the bridal party or Mass arrangements at the service… and that about covers it. As time has rolled on and with the rise of both social media influencers and TV stardom, our favourite influential people with a flair for drama have begun pushing the limits for florists and flowers as to what can be accomplished on these big, fairytale-inspired wedding days.
A hugely popular addition to the wedding florist’s list has been floral installations and here at The Lily Pad Florist, we’ve had our fair share of experience creating these whimsical beauties. They are certainly not simple, and they tend to bring with them some interesting challenges. We’ve seen all kinds of intricate and abstract designs which we can honestly say we’ve loved. It’s clear that they bring with them that “wow” factor and always add an extra touch of magic to the wedding atmosphere. These special pieces create lifelong backdrops to the couples forever pictures and are real moment makers. Flowers draping down banisters and cascading down staircases. Budding explosions of colour across the ceiling, or lush flower walls providing jaw dropping settings for those unending streams of tagged social posts, these artistic creations help paint the space with the essence of wedding day bliss.
Having worked on our own installations, the feedback received has been incredulous. The effect is often described as nothing short of awe-inspiring for which we couldn’t be more appreciative and grateful for. Recently, we had the privilege of constructing three magnificent, suspended hoop installations at Hilles House, with one hoop spanning an impressive 8-feet in diameter and the other two, more manageable, at “only” 6-feet in diameter. This required all hands-on deck with our team doing everything from prepping the frames with eco-friendly floral foam, chicken mesh, and greening the frames with an abundance of foliage, artistically arranging the focal flowers and then fastening and securing the hoops into position whilst precariously balanced at the end of a 6-meter ladder. While some of our talented team worked on creating these herbaceous hanging installations, others worked on the remaining floral pieces for the big day thus ensuring all elements came together seamlessly.
Our bride and groom decided on a romantic palette of white, ivory and soft pale blue for their beautiful summer wedding. As stunning as everything was, when those hoops ascended into position, the atmosphere blossomed into something out of a fairytale. It was fascinating to see, with the addition of these floral installations, how much the venue morphed into a truly enchanted space. Using a mixture of silks and real flowers we were able to incorporate flowers which weren’t yet in season and ensure that the hoops stayed looking fresh for the duration. The dangling florals draping down from the installations gave a certain dimension and scale and created a sense of movement – all of which seemed to bolster and add impact to the magical setting.
Floral Installations have certainly become a very popular wedding feature, and we have seen why. From all varying styles, shapes and sizes, they sure do add a magic touch to the already beautiful wedding venues. If these moment-makers are something you are considering adding to your special day, our talented team is always ready to lend a helping hand in bringing your vision to life.
