How to Make Flowers Last Longer

Mar 9, 2022 | Flower Care

There’s nothing like a freshly cut bouquet of flowers, but it’s always a disappointment when they start to wilt.

Follow these expert tips to help make your flowers last longer so you can keep enjoying them for as long as possible:

  • Always wash vases in diluted bleach (so use like you would washing up liquid).  This will get rid of any bacteria, which will shorten the life of the flowers.  On that note, never ever use washing up liquid to wash receptacles!
  • Always have your vase of clean, fresh water ready before you begin.  You will need a pair of clean, sharp scissors or secateurs.
  • Start by removing any foliage that will sit below the water line.  They will begin to rot in the water and introduce bacteria.
  • Arrange the flowers either in your hand or straight into the vase, ensuring that every stem is freshly cut by at least a couple of centimetres, and at an angle.  This will increase the surface area of stems, exposing more water drinking cells and allowing them to drink more.  It should also prevent stems sitting flat on the bottom of the vase, limiting their ability to take in water.
  • Flowers should always be kept out of direct sunlight, and somewhere cool.
  • Try to change the water every 2 days, recutting the stems as above.
